Why Math?
Mathematics is all around us. Our past, present and future accomplishments are built upon the work of many men and women from the start of civilization. Education is what sustains our society and mathematics is growing more important with each generation. New York State's adoption of the Common Core State Mathematics Standard reflects this importance. New York diploma requirements include algebra I, geometry, algebra 2 and trigonmetry, with colleges favoring students who have a strong fundemental knowledge of mathematics and the ability to apply this knowledge to solving real world problems. If newly accepted college students fail to meet the above requirements, they are required to take remedial math, for no credit, eg CUNY skill requirements. In New York public schools, students are assessed, in grades 3 through 8, with a New York Mathematics Test. All students, whether public, private, or home schooled must meet the above minimum requirements. Many majors in college require calculus and/or statistics for degree requirements. Regardless of what educational path is taken, mathematics is enjoyed as an intellectual endeavor in its own right.
